There are no excuses in Aviation, Olowo tells graduates
The President of the Aviation Safety Round Table Initiative, ASRTI, and CEO Sabre Travel Network West Africa, Dr. Gabriel Olowo says excuses are not tolerated in the industry.
Olowo made this known to some university graduates who paid him a courtesy visit at the company’s head office in Lagos on Friday.
The graduates, who were led by the editor of Travel and Business News, Mr. Ewos Iroro, are part of a young graduates empowerment initiative organised by the magazine.
“Aviation is a no-nonsense industry. There is no ‘I am sorry sir’ in aviation. Every ‘I am sorry’ is a safety issue. People close to me know that I hate ‘I am sorry sir’. That’s what aviation turned me to,” Olowo said.
“A pilot commits an error, he’s going to not only kill himself, he’ll kill all the population he takes with him. The guy at the ticket desk commits an error, he’s going to lose millions in damages,” he added.
Iroro, who is also the secretary of Airline Operators of Nigeria, AON, thanked the Sabre CEO for his support to the initiative which had been running since 2014.
“In those five years, we have been able to receive the generous blessings from Sabre. Each year we get five slots to train young graduates in airline ticketing and basic reservation,” he said.
“Many of them (graduates) have started a career in the sector. They have taken responsibility for their lives and have started their own business,” Iroro added.
The graduates then thanked Olowo for giving them the opportunity to meet with him and also undergo the Sabre training.
“I’ve always been fascinated by aviation, right from when I was small. I just want to get more understanding. That’s why I am here,” Princess, one of the graduates, said.
